About Baimi

Hangzhou Baimi Intelligent Technology Development Co., Ltd. is a provider of intelligent logistics products and services. Baimi is dedicated to providing logistical software, systems integration, and third-party service platforms for express shipping and logistics enterprises. They are the first service provider in China to have provided one-stop, intelligent last-mile delivery solutions for universities. The company is committed to providing a safe, secure, and easy-to-use express shipping platform that connects shipping companies, teachers, and students with ease.

Baimi is not only a service provider. They have developed and integrated their own products as well, products like operations platforms, smart self-service express shipping stations, monitoring and management systems, and mobile terminals.

Challenges

Baimi is primarily focused on providing centralized logistics for colleges and universities, smart terminal management platforms, and other related value-added services. Their system needs to store data related to campus users, shipping, packages, orders, and transactions. They don't have a lot of personnel available for O&M, so building and maintaining their own database is not a practical solution. A sufficiently stable database would be too expensive and too difficult to maintain.

Solution

Baimi services require far more database reads than writes, so one way they can improve database performance is to separate the load for reads from writes. Unfortunately the process of read/write separation is complex, but HUAWEI CLOUD is up to the task.

After learning that their read/write ratio is typically as high as 8:2, and that they needed read/write splitting to improve performance, HUAWEI CLOUD designed a cloud database solution that combines Distributed Database Middleware (DDM) with Relational Database Service (RDS). DDM sorts the data into different tables and sub databases, decomposing and allocating tremendous amount of data, preparing it for MySQL primary/standby database instances and read replicas.

RDS for MySQL is secure, stable, scalable, and easy to manage. It works well right out of the box. It frees you to focus on developing services. A HUAWEI CLOUD MySQL database requires very little setup, very little configuration. You can have a very reliable, high-performance database up and running in just a few minutes, and the console makes it easy to manage instances, modify parameters, back up or restore data, monitor alarms, and perform other management operations. If you need more speed or capacity, you can add additional read-only instances as needed. Adding instances to improve read performance or add capacity is easy.

The solution HUAWEI CLOUD designed for Baimi delivers availability, reliability, and security. The data copies are saved to three different elastic volume servers, in three different availability zones. This multiple-AZ, 3-copy storage model provides high availability and rock-solid reliability. Then VPCs are used to isolate, protect, and control access to the data.

The primary/standby DB instances and read replicas can provide 3-copy storage within a single AZ, or across several different AZs, delivering the reliability and high availability that Baimi requires.

Benefits

With the DDM+RDS solution in place, the load on Baimi's main database dropped by 40%; the cost of O&M dropped 70%; and the cost of labor for a single site dropped 50%.

    Testimonials

"This solution not only resolved our read/write splitting issue, it also significantly reduced the cost of O&M and other labor costs. HUAWEI CLOUD is cost-effective, the after-sales services have been good, and our problems were resolved quickly. After the database was migrated to the cloud, the platform stability was improved too."
