Huawei Cloud Wins Multiple Awards at China International Big Data Industry Expo 2022

The China International Big Data Industry Expo (or Big Data Expo) was held online on May 26, 2022. As the world's first big data-themed expo, this event was co-sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the Cyberspace Administration of China, plus the Guizhou Provincial Government. It is an important platform that promotes the use of big data technologies across industries worldwide.

Each year since 2015, this Expo has given out a number of awards to recognize achievements in big data technologies. This year, Huawei Cloud is once again a big winner.

At the opening ceremony of this event, Mr. Zhang Ping'an, Huawei's Senior Vice President and Huawei Cloud CEO delivered a keynote speech. Echoing the theme of this year's Big Data Expo — Seize New Opportunities, Share Digital Value — Mr. Zhang proposed three initiatives: consolidating data resources to achieve economies of scale; redefining data mining and unleashing the power of data through data-AI convergence; and helping enterprises easily migrate to and use the cloud by promoting the Everything-as-a-Service (XaaS) model.

Consolidating data resources to achieve economies of scale

China's "Eastern Data and Western Computing" project aims to seize the strategic opportunities presented by an accelerated digital economy worldwide and shape new paradigms of computing infrastructure in China. In support of this national project and the ambition to build China's "Data Valley", Huawei Cloud has deployed its global HQ and its largest cloud data center in Guizhou. These are all ongoing efforts in China aiming at consolidating data resources across the nation to improve resource utilization and achieve economies of scale.

Redefining data mining through data-AI convergence

In this digital era, it is widely understood that data has become an essential factor of production, just like land, labor, and capital. However, due to reasons like inefficient data governance, the true value of data has yet to be fully explored.

Huawei Cloud has put major efforts into building a cloud platform featuring deep convergence between data and AI. By streamlining both data governance and AI development, Huawei Cloud offers unified development environments, unified metadata management, and unified storage, with data development accelerated from weeks to hours. Data storage costs are reduced significantly, and data and AI development are hugely modernized.

Enabling enterprises to easily migrate to and use the cloud by promoting Everything-as-a-Service

To help enterprises overcome challenges associated with cloud use, Huawei Cloud advocates a model called "everything as a service", or XaaS, where infrastructure, technology, expertise, and more are offered as standard cloud services, so that customers from every industry can easily move to and use the cloud to supercharge their business. For example, we all know that AI is useful, but few have the expertise and data needed to quickly develop AI applications and deploy them to solve real-world problems and create real value. To help accelerate AI adoption, Huawei Cloud offers AI, big data, audio and video, and more technologies, plus integrated development tools on its platform, so developers and customers can access them on-demand, from anywhere.

Huawei Cloud has also condensed its many years of experience and best practices in digital transformation in a wide range of industries, such as government, finance, and manufacturing, as well as those of its partners, and offers them as standard cloud services. Today, Huawei Cloud is offering solutions covering over 50 different scenarios, which are accessible through more than 20,000 APIs. This way, enterprises gain easy access to best practices and cutting-edge technologies and expertise from across many industries, so they don't have to always reinvent the wheel.

The "Data Expo Release" announced multiple awards for Huawei Cloud recognizing its innovation in databases, data lakes, and data-AI converged analytics. For example, the cooperation between Mengxiang Group (a fast-growing e-commerce platform) and Huawei Cloud, where Mengxiang Group used Huawei Cloud's big data and analytics solutions to harness the enormous value of data and help millions of women working from home tap into the e-commerce business, was selected as one of the "Top 10 Big Data Success Stories" at the Expo.

Awards received by Huawei Cloud at Big Data Expo 2022 include the following:

Huawei Cloud GaussDB(for openGauss)

Leading Technology Achievement Award – New Product

This award is one of the most important awards given out by the Expo and is very influential in the big data industry.

GaussDB(for openGauss) is Huawei Cloud's distributed relational database purpose-built for mission-critical enterprise workloads. It is part of the openGauss ecosystem led by Huawei.

For example, Huawei Cloud provided a one-stop data migration solution to help ICBC transform its core transaction systems into a distributed architecture, delivering three major benefits for the customer: high availability, linear performance improvement, and elastic scalability. The migration was smooth, management was simplified, and the reliability of the bank's core transaction systems was improved significantly. In addition, the new systems are able to scale and evolve smoothly to meet demand for both today and tomorrow.

Huawei Cloud's Data-AI Converged Platform

Leading Technology Achievement Award - Excellent Project

Huawei Cloud is building a unified, cloud-based data foundation for digital transformation by combining AI and data. This platform brings together data scattered across different departments and sectors within a large organization and stores it in a unified data lake. This way, developers can focus on using the latest algorithms to extract value from all kinds of data on an integrated development platform, without having to worry about any of the underlying technical details like file management, or the complex management and O&M for analytical or AI engines.

For example, the mobility service platform T3 migrated multiple clusters to Huawei Cloud's integrated lakehouse solution featuring decoupled computing and storage. The new platform supports both BI and AI scenarios. It cuts the TCO by over 20% and improves data processing efficiency by 150%. In addition, it supports fast rollout of a broad choice of payment methods, so T3 can serve a considerably larger user base, no matter what payment method they use. The convergence of data and AI has made it easier to manage data and more efficient to run machine learning algorithms. This also helps T3 deliver a better, safer passenger experience.

Huawei Cloud FusionInsight MRS IoTDB

Leading Technology Achievement Award - Excellent Project

Huawei Cloud FusionInsight MRS IoTDB focuses on processing complex time series data in industrial IoT. It eliminates the functionality and performance bottlenecks typically experienced by general-purpose databases when faced with large volumes of complex time series data. It is a powerful industrial IoT big data solution spanning the cloud, edge, and device.

Currently, Tsinghua University and Huawei Cloud are working together on exploring new forms of academia-industry collaboration based on the open-source Apache IoTDB. The joint efforts are accelerating the development and integration of a commercial IoTDB solution powered by Huawei Cloud's FusionInsight MRS cloud-native data lake solution, and also enhancing the "three data lakes + one data mart" architecture of MRS. The goal is to develop an enterprise-grade database for analyzing massive amounts of time series data for industrial scenarios.

IoTDB technologies are now used in many industrial-scale time series data analysis applications in industries like transportation and manufacturing.

Huawei Cloud Drives Agile Innovation at Mengxiang Group:

Top 10 Big Data Success Stories

A pioneer in new e-commerce, Mengxiang Group is laser-focused on data-driven innovation by leveraging Huawei Cloud's cloud, big data, and AI technologies. The platform equips more than 2 million women to secure an independent income by marketing and selling products through online mini stores, without any technological background or major financial investments. This example of using data and AI to drive innovation and advance social good has been selected as an exemplary case study for showing how to achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Huawei Cloud's data-AI converged solution helped Mengxiang Group lower TCO by 30% and improved the real-time analytical capacity by 50%. Huawei Cloud's GaussDB(DWS) service provides a wide range of analytics services, including T+1 batch analysis, stream analysis, small and micro-scale real-time analysis, IoT analysis, interactive analysis, and complex high-dimensional analysis, with a 100 PB of capacity. With support for ultra-large clusters and hybrid workloads, this solution guarantees steady SLA compliance in multi-tenant and high-concurrency scenarios, enabling Mengxiang Group to expand freely without worrying about IT.

With over 10 years of R&D and steady investment in the field of data technology and its mature, end-to-end data governance solutions, Huawei Cloud is well positioned to help customers from e-commerce, gaming, finance, insurance, logistics, retail, and more industries to advance business intelligence and unleash the power of data.

Mr. Zhang Ping'an ended his speech with the following: "Looking forward, we will continue to build and innovate by working closely with our customers, partners, and developers to build a solid, ubiquitous cloud foundation for an intelligent world, so that together we can seize new opportunities and share digital value."

Huawei Cloud and HUST Team Dual Champions in DIMACS Implementation Challenge

At its recent 12th Implementation Challenge on Vehicle Routing Problems, DIMACS awarded multiple medals to the Huawei Cloud-HUST joint team. Teaming up with Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), the Huawei Cloud Alkaid Scheduling Algorithm Team were the only participants to win more than two Gold medals, and the team with the most top-3 placings overall with one Silver and two Bronze medals. This continues their stellar track record after two championships at the OCP and USCP tracks of the GECCO 2020 Competition and more than 50 PDPTW world records.

The Challenges were started by the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS) in 1990. Dedicated to promoting algorithm research for major application problems, they are renowned and respected international computing algorithm competitions. Previous Challenges include the traveling salesman problem, graph partitioning problem, network flow and matching problem, shortest path problem, semidefinite and related optimization problems, which are the most difficult and challenging topics in the field of computational complexity theory and operations optimization. Being both theoretical and practical, the current Challenge attracted more than 50 top research teams from around the world, representing both enterprise and academia from countries such as France and Canada. With that many famous scholars in the field participating, the medal placements are especially hard to win.

The 12th DIMACS Implementation Challenge is about the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). As a typical NP-hard problem, the VRP has been continuously studied by researchers for more than half a century. As with previous Challenges, DIMACS chose one of the most challenging subjects in the field to solve and a subject of great theoretical and practical value even today.

At the core of the VRP problem is finding the optimal path in a graph network that satisfies a series of constraints. To be considered optimal, the path must minimize time, cost, and other factors. These objectives must be solved with certain constraints and limited resources. VRP is used in many fields, such as resource scheduling, logistics, and route planning. Cloud computing also requires complex constraint optimization. A typical scenario would be optimizing cloud resource utilization and maximizing tenant service quality under constraints such as capacity, topology, and power. This is a key issue and competitiveness factor for operations capability and customer service quality on the cloud platform. At the scale of the public cloud, a 1% increase in resource efficiency may save tens of millions of dollars at the same user service quality. Huawei Cloud invests heavily in optimization algorithm research and accumulating practical experience, and participating in this Challenge reflects this commitment.

The Huawei Cloud Alkaid scheduling algorithm team is led by Huawei's Young Talents and Doctorate professionals. Highly experienced in algorithm design and implementation and previous winners in the ACM competition, they work closely with the HUST team, headed by Professor Lv Zhipeng, on scheduling optimization to tackle multiple complex optimization problems in Huawei Cloud's scheduling scenarios. Professor Lv's team is also experienced in optimization algorithms and a multiple heavyweight competition winner. Building on the Alkaid Cloud Brain, the Huawei Cloud team's intelligent decision optimization engine framework is tailored for cloud scenarios. The flexible and scalable algorithm policy libraries in this framework adapt to changing cloud scenarios and solution requirements, especially when requiring large-scale optimization under complex constraints. At the Challenge, the team designed a new neighborhood search operator and perturbation mechanism for the VRP problem based on the solution engine framework and algorithm strategy library, and boosted the efficiency of neighborhood search using a lazy loading cache mechanism. The team's winning algorithm beat the runner up by more than 5% on average and more than 10% in some cases, remarkable results considering such fierce competition and the challenge of solving a 50-year-old problem.

In the future, Huawei Cloud will optimize the decision-making, optimization, and solution capabilities of the Alkaid Cloud Brain for full competitiveness in all-domain scheduling, capacity management, SLA assurance, and other scenarios. Huawei Cloud strives to provide infrastructure with the ultimate performance, rock-solid stability, diversified computing power, and cloud-edge-device collaboration needed by various industries. In addition, Huawei Cloud will continue to make full use of full-stack innovation to explore all-domain scheduling and software-hardware collaboration in the distributed cloud so its enterprise customers enjoy a lean, compelling cloud experience.

Huawei Cloud GaussDB(DWS) Certified by CC for Its Strong Security Capabilities

On March 8, 2022, the Huawei GaussDB 200 data warehouse, also known as Huawei Cloud GaussDB(DWS), was officially granted the CC EAL2 + ALC_FLR.2 — an international authoritative security certification for information technologies. Only six vendors worldwide have obtained this certification.

The Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation (Common Criteria or CC) is an international standard (ISO 15408) for evaluating the information security of IT products. The Common Criteria Recognition Arrangement (CCRA) comprises 31 member countries/regions, including the U.S., UK, Germany, France, and Japan. It is one of the most highly respected security certifications in the world.

By conducting over 100 tests, the certification body evaluates product and document security from six aspects. Huawei Cloud GaussDB(DWS) passed with comprehensive security solutions, covering fine-grained security audits, built-in data masking, and fine-grained permissions management. The certification demonstrates how Huawei Cloud GaussDB(DWS) meets strict security standards as an industry-leading data warehouse.

Strong Security in Six Aspects

Huawei Cloud GaussDB(DWS) is a distributed database with analytics and hybrid load capabilities. It can be utilized for enterprise data warehouses, data marts, data exploration, IoT analysis, and hybrid load processing. GaussDB(DWS) employs enterprise-grade financial kernels and a unified architecture, provides public and hybrid cloud services with consistent user experience, and is used for analytics and decision-making systems in industries such as automobile, manufacturing, retail, logistics, Internet, finance, government, and telecom.

It provides robust measures to protect data assets against risks and threats, and earned the certification by passing the following tests:

Security audit log: Configurable fine-grained security audits implement security event backtracking, detection, and alarm response, deterring malicious behavior.

User data protection: Data masking policies can be created to prevent sensitive information from leaking, and an encryption cluster automatically encrypts static user data. As for fine-grained permission management, users must pass the permission check before performing any operations. In addition, the database administrator cannot add, delete, query, or modify the objects of private users without authorization.

Identity authentication and authorization: This refers to identity authentication based on IAM along with usernames and passwords. The system minimizes permissions by default and supports role-based permission management to prevent unauthorized access.

Security management: Security attributes, security functions, and roles can be managed, and user security policies can also be configured, including the password reuse period, number of permitted login failures, password validity period, and password complexity. Additionally, network access control can be configured, including user permission management, IP permission management, SSL connection, and permission management for databases, modes, and database objects.

Security self-protection: Security functions and their data are self-protected to prevent damage or evasion. To implement self-protection, users can perform full backup, full restoration, incremental backup, and incremental restoration of clusters.

Client access: When a client accesses and performs operations on GaussDB(DWS), a user session must be established first, allowing the client to interact with GaussDB(DWS). User sessions can be controlled from different dimensions, including password validity period; number of concurrent sessions; session establishment, locking, unlocking, and termination; IP address permission management; and access of specific users and IP addresses.

Highlighting its innovative concept of “Everything as a Service”, HUAWEI CLOUD shares with global visitors -- as part of a host of exhibitions, forums, and keynotes -- its vision and commitment to building the cloud foundation for an intelligent world with ubiquitous cloud and pervasive intelligence.

HUAWEI CLOUD Commits to Building the Cloud Foundation for an Intelligent World

Ahead of this year’s event, Mr. William Dong, Marketing Director of HUAWEI CLOUD, addressed global operators in a keynote speech under the theme of “Diving into Digital and Driving New Growth, with Everything as a Service” at the MWC “+IT, New Growth” Forum on February 27.

The telecom industry has long been recognized as a pioneer in digitalization, and in recent years, cloud computing is shaping up to be a key technology for digitalization. Based on over 30 years of expertise in ICT technologies, products, and solutions, HUAWEI CLOUD provides global carriers with deployment modes built on cloud-native distributed architecture and multiple sales models.

“We are deeply engaged in digitalization as a service,” said Mr. William Dong. “Alongside global carriers, HUAWEI CLOUD shares Huawei's outstanding technological innovations with enterprise customers to promote new growth in the carrier business.”

Furthermore, Mr. Dong emphasized HUAWEI CLOUD’s commitment to diving into digital and providing Everything as a Service through three pillars of service.

First, Infrastructure as a Service refers to the expansion of global data centers and networks for a seamless and accessible experience for customers around the world.

Second, Technology as a Service transforms R&D efforts into cutting-edge technologies and cloud services for customers, partners, and developers in a wide variety of industries. This tech includes cloud-native container cluster scheduling, machine learning, block chain, 5G network planning, and autonomous driving.

Third, Expertise as a Service draws from best practices in digital transformation to develop digital assets. HUAWEI CLOUD then uses these assets in building application platforms and process platforms to help customers embrace digital transformation and grow faster.

Picture of William Dong and caption

HUAWEI CLOUD Showcases Cloud Excellence with Innovative Exhibits

As part of the exhibition, HUAWEI CLOUD’s first virtual human employee Sara made an appearance at MWC 2022. As the virtual guide, Sara interacted with visitors by providing information about different exhibits, answering questions, and performing Chinese traditional dance. The virtual human demonstrates HUAWEI CLOUD’s powerful technologies, including NLP, intelligent voice driver, cloud rendering and more. Sara will interact with operator customers and partners from around the world from now until March 3.

Sara was created by HUAWEI CLOUD's reimagined digital content production line, MetaStudio. The platform facilitates automated film and television production, from editing to 3D modeling and rendering. It also features cutting-edge technologies such as virtual human, 3D space, and cloud AR.

MetaStudio easily slashes the production cycle of a 4K HD program from weeks to less than 24 hours, allowing users to broadcast on the same day as production. In this metaverse future, MetaStudio will reshape the media industry.

Another highlight of the exhibition is the large-scale model of HUAWEI CLOUD drug molecules. Made possible by leading intelligence and big data technologies from HUAWEI CLOUD EIHealth, the Pangu model has learned the chemical structure of 1.7 billion small molecules.

Professor Liu bing from Imperial College London uses this model to design new broad-spectrum antibacterial. With this design, researchers can target optimization on lead compounds using intelligence technology in just one month, a process that previously took years.

In 2020, during the early stage of the COVID-19 outbreak, the EIHealth platform was used to perform virtual drug screening for over 20 target proteins of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 infection. This allowed doctors and researchers to conduct further research into the candidate drugs and drug-like compounds identified. The project was shortlisted for Best Innovation for COVID-19 Pandemic Response & Recovery in the Global Mobile Awards 2022.

In the past year, HUAWEI CLOUD continued to innovate and achieved numerous breakthroughs with its cutting-edge technologies, expertise, and know-hows.

According to Gartner's Market Share: IT Services, Worldwide 2020 research report released in April 2021, HUAWEI CLOUD ranks fifth in the global IaaS market and top two in China. To date, HUAWEI CLOUD has launched more than 220 cloud services and 210 solutions, aggregated more than 30,000 partners worldwide, developed 2.6 million developers, and released more than 6,100 applications on the cloud market.

The past year also saw the launch of four new regions in Kuala Lumpur, Abu Dhabi, Mexico City, and China's Ulanqab. As of today, HUAWEI CLOUD has grown its availability zones from 45 to 61, covering more than 170 countries and regions, as it plans to build more regions around the world.

MWC 2022 runs from February 28 to March 3 in Barcelona, Spain.
