Master/standby: Each master/standby instance runs on two nodes (one master and one standby). The standby node replicates data synchronously from the master node. If the master node fails, the standby node automatically becomes the master node.

If there are no client nodes in the cluster, data nodes will need to additionally handle cluster access and data analytics requests; if there are no master nodes, data nodes will need to provide cluster management. Master nodes (ess-master): optional.
